Description : Mary Todd Lincoln was born in December of 1818 and died in July of 1882. She was married to Abraham Lincoln and was the First Lady of the United States from 1861. She was seated next to him in the theater when he was assassinated in 1865. This suite of coral has the provenance of being worn by Mary. Coral was a rare commodity in the 1800's and generally came from Italy. This magnificent suite of necklace, bracelet, pin and earrings is in pristine condition, and comes in its original box. Coral is a living organism that is a fundamental to creating biospheres in the oceans that are called reefs. As a gemstone it is fairly soft and can be easily carved. The detail in this set is astonishing. Every petal of each flower is exquisitely crafted, and the branches in the bracelet will amaze you, as they are hinged on pins. The earrings have been converted to a leverback style closure known to be from modern times. Mary loved her husband, and even though she was born in Kentucky was a staunch supporter of her husband's cause against slavery. This museum worthy suite is a United States historical treasure.
