Description : In the Hopi culture the animal kingdom represented life, spirit guides, survival and healing. Each animal depicted on this handmade Watson Honanie tapered ring is significant to his Native American culture. The buffalo symbolizes strength and survival during the winter months. The elk represents endurance and resilience. The ram is a supernatural messenger possessing the ability to bring clouds and rain. The bear represents authority and leadership honoring family lineage. The sun represents 'Tewa' and is a symbol of its life giving force. Watson Honanie is a member of the Hopi Bear clan family and has been fabricating his signature style jewelry since 1973 when he learned to make jewelry on the Hopi reservation during his summer months off of school. He was taught by his uncles and continued to work with his siblings until his passing in 2023. This tapered ring is a prime example of his 14KY gold overlay technique which he developed and was considered his trade secret for how articulate he was able to overlay the gold onto the raised, sterling silver textural details of his work.
