What we are seeing is the hexagonal crystal structure outlined in thousands of needle-like inclusions, called rutile silk, where the light enters the inclusion and is reflected back out. Using a point light source you can see the precise shape of the 6 pointed star brilliantly highlighted. The star formation is called asterism. Ruby is a form of corundum, which is rated 9 on the Moh's scale for hardness and durability. Star rubies are believed to hold mystical properties, and promote protection for the wearer and good fortune.
