Description : Satsuma is a form of Japanese porcelain pottery found as early as 1600. This piece set in a 14ky gold ring was most likely a button. The process of Satsuma may have been inspired by Korean ceramics, and is an example of the ivory bodied pieces that were gilded, polychromatic enameled, overglazed designs specifically created for a growing export market. The image is of an iris found in Japan called Hana Shobu. The delicacy, the illuminated surface and the detailed intimate image of the iris is endlessly fascinating, and the complimentary 14KY gold setting is the perfect form to highlight this delightful cultural treasure.
