Silica-rich water seeps into underground rocks, and cavities where it solidifies. Boulder opal is formed on top of the host rock, and sometimes is fashioned with the host rock attached. It is often a thin layer of opal that is brightly colored, much like the spheres of bubbles in your dish soap.
