Description : Made in 1950 in Japan, this 10K white gold ring holds a star sapphire oval cabochon in the center of the setting and has a spray of round white brilliant cut diamonds in a variety of different shapes around it. This is a very unique ring. Star sapphires are an acquired taste. The sapphire crystal has six sides and is called a hexagonal formation. When the sapphire (corundum) is found in its crystalline form, the cutter makes a decision as to how it should be fashioned. Star sapphires are generally cloudy to translucent, however when cut; show the six legs of the crystal. This phenomenon is called asterism, which is what the star is called in technical terminology. It shows needle-like inclusions that bounce the rays of light absorbed into the gem directly back out. This is perceived as a 6 pointed star. All star sapphires are cabochons, and look best when cut as an oval and seen with a point light source. Size 5
