Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Purse hand crocheted with silver coin
Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Purse hand crocheted with silver coin
Description : A Chatelain was a purse on a set of short chains that would carry a thimble, keys or a sewing kit. The feminine form of this word, describing an intimate purse, indicates the 'keeper of the Castle'. What an intriguing piece to wear. Clipped to a belt you could put a lipstick in there. This piece defines a very specific use and time in history. I think we need to make a new style for our phone! Hand crocheted and protected by a sterling silver serpent dragon in the center and repeating design details create the openwork frame for the fabric of the purse. A silver coin of Columbus is connected to the chain at the top and the motif appears to be Scottish in origin. Approximately 90mm in diameter.
