Vintage Shakudo Minuki Chicken and Rooster jacket pin

Description : The Japanese term Minuki translates to 'beautiful effort', meaning to strive toward excellence and inner grace. The process of making the alloy of Shakudo can vary from looking like bronze to a red and copper metal mixed with gold that oxidizes to a patina of dark black. It can sometimes resemble lacquer. Although the process began in the Nara period of Japan dating to c. 710 AD, it was seen in Europe in the mid 19th century. This alloy was specifically developed to create small fittings on swords and other types of connectors and ornaments. This rooster and chicken are joined together as pins by a short chain to a floral emblem, most likely used to fasten the two sides of a jacket. The rooster symbolizes the head of the family or village and the chicken represents the home and domesticity.
