Art Noveau Brass and paste gem brooch
Art Noveau Brass and paste gem brooch
Description : Created in approximately 1890, this brass pin is a really nice example of paste gems. Paste gems were generally made of glass fashioned into gemstone shapes, and in some cases lead crystals were also used to look like faceted gems. Paste was a way to have a piece of jewelry that was affordable which made jewelry more available to everyone. This intimate portrait is a woman who appears to be older, with a double pearl necklace. She is surrounded by white paste gemstones, and 2 flowers flank her image with red paste stones. This is an interesting piece that tells a story about the woman in the 18mmx26mm frame.
