Mid-Century Modern 18KY gold, ruby, emerald and sapphire scarecrow brooch
Mid-Century Modern 18KY gold, ruby, emerald and sapphire scarecrow brooch
Description : Scarecrows have been depicted since Ancient Egypt or possibly even earlier. Originally they were tunics that were hung in the fields to scare away the crop eating quails. Over time the meaning of the scarecrow changed as they were used in battle as suprise tactics. They were also the guardians of the crops, and represented harvest in the fields. Today they are still used in the fields to scare away birds. Ray Bolger played the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, who upon his journey with Dorothy, hoped he could have a brain. Cast in 18KY solid gold this pin represents all of the above. He has a beatific look on his face, as if looking to the heavens, and the patchwork repairs on his ragged clothes are each depicted with a flush set, 2.5mm princess cut ruby, emerald and sapphire gemstone. The settings are serrated, and suggest the stitching of each patch. The texture on his clothing is a classic Mid-Century Modern detail. At 55mm in length, his size embodies an impressive amount of gold. Sapphire is the birthstone for emerald, Ruby is for July and Emerald is for May, but the image of a scarecrow is the signifier for harvest, autumn, and the onset of winter.
