Description : Celluloid is one of the first plastics ever to be manufactured. It was a revolutionary material that could create patterns on functional items like pens and pencils. The owl symbolized wisdom, legal issues and scholarly pursuit. The glass eyes of this owl represent the all knowing eyes of intuition. Most likely designed for a chatelaine, this Victorian creature is magnificent in presence. The celluloid swirls into the definition of his feathers and wing shape. Mechanical pencils were very popular in the 1920's and were called 'propelling pencils' and often more of a novelty than a functional object. The lead required is approximately 1.8mm.
