Description : Few objects in the world have changed the entire course of history than the compass. The first compasses were developed over 2,000 years ago in China, and were made from a magnetic material called 'lodestone'. Originally designed for geomancy and fortune telling, this mysterious object was used around 960 AD for directional navigation and called a 'South Pointing Fish'. The pipe was a symbol for leisure, and indicated social status. Groups were formed for pipe smoking that were established communities of learning etiquette and community discourse. This sterling silver cast Victorian pipe has a compass tucked inside the bowl. This pendant speaks to the language of leisure, and travel, something very much enjoyed. It might not be a tradition that is accepted in this day, but certainly can be remembered fondly.
