Description : Plique-à-jour means 'letting in daylight' which this pendant does so well. This technique has been found in the 6th century BC during the Byzantine Empire. It has also been called 'clear enamel'. The piece of jewelry is pierced with openings like stained glass windows, and sheets of colored glass are fused to the back. This is a very labor intensive process, and rarely used today. It was revived in the Victorian era, and was used often in the Russian and Scandinavian aristocracy. This large light, airy heart pendant has alternating areas of blue and orange plique a jour applied to a pattern of openings throughout the pendant. The holes in this pendant also line up in a nearly optical illusion appearance. This pendant is in pristine condition, as if it was never worn. Chain sold separately.
