Description : Jules Carpentier was originally a camera maker. He also developed a dual lens camera called a stereoscope; The Jumelle (the word for binoculars) dual lens was also developed into a pair of binoculars for sport and the opera. Finely built in the late 1800's this pair of 'lunettes d'opera' was definitely made for an aristocratic woman. The first pair of binoculars were made in London in 1730, but was improved upon in Paris by Pierre Lemiere in 1825. These 18KY gold plated binoculars are enameled with a lovely pastoral scene on both sides. They are signed Carpentier, Paris. These are a lovely collector's item.
