Description : Juliana Williams is a prestigious Dine/Navajo silversmith known for her extravagant petit point turquoise work. She often collaborated with her sister in law, Martha Smiley. This exquisite squash blossom necklace is one of the finest examples of their extensive work together, and is signed with both initials, JW MS. The squash blossom is the signature necklace of the Dine tribe, and represents a ceremonial piece of jewelry and is to be worn with great pride. The squash blossom style was derived from the influence of the Spanish Americans as early as 1870. There is some discussion that the term ‘squash blossom’ was also a reference to the pomegranate seed found on the buttons of the Spanish military. Each piece of turquoise is cut and bezel set in this mandala-like design and this necklace is a piece of cultural history, as well as a fine example of Native American woman made jewelry. It an absolute treasure.
