Description : An amphora type of vessel has been found as early as the Neolithic period. It is a terracotta ceramic or metal container specifically shaped with a pointed bottom for transportation and storage of either liquid or dry goods, usually wines and oils. They were stacked very tightly together and set in a rack, much like you would find in a wine cellar today. Two handles are on the top, near a narrow opening that had a stopper that sealed the liquid inside. The handles were designed so that one person could pour from the amphora. The word 'amphora' comes from a compound word meaning 'on both sides' and 'a carrier'. Although the amphora was the traditional carrier for the Etruscans, no word in Etruscan translates directly to the term. Interestingly enough, the 1870’s were considered the Etruscan Revival period. Dozens of tiny 22KY gold blue enamel amphorae hang perfectly off of an incredible 22KY gold handmade wire chain. The barrel clasp is also 22KY gold and is an example of granulation, a process that fuses texture to the surface without solder. There are many revival periods throughout art history, and are usually connected to an inspiring event that occurs. The early Etruscans lived in Italy in the 7th to 3rd centuries BCE. A 19th revival occurred when several tombs were unearthed, and artisans around the world took note. This necklace is 16" long fitting an average neck length. The amphorae look alive, like dancing ladies with their hands on their hips. Everything about this piece was made with masterful craftsmanship rarely found in jewelry today.
