Description : The term Zolotnik was a Russian Victorian method of hallmarking the gold content of a piece of jewelry. One Zolotnik weighed 4.26 grams, and the stamp of 56 zolotniks indicated 14KY gold. As the zolotnik is no longer used as a gold purity indicator this verifies that the age of this necklace is from the early 1900's. This machine manufactured snake chain with a snake and garnet eye clasp is a vintage masterpiece. At 18" long this is a perfect length to wear with a sweater or open V neck. The snake's head and glittering garnet eyes are realistically rendered, and works like an alligator clip that clasps the opposite end. This becomes what is called an ouroboros, the eternal life cycle represented by a snake eating its tail.
