Description : Shakudo was originally developed to accent the swords of the Samurai warriors during the Edo Period from 1603-1868. It was specifically for sword guards and handle ornaments. The alloys used for this process are generally 75% copper and 5-20% gold. The contrast of the metals depicted miniature scenes from nature. In this locket on one side is an Eagle and Bonsai, and on the other is a crane with Mt. Fuji in the background. This pristine treasure dates approximately to 1870. The dark background makes the highlight floral and botanical details of silver and gold sharply stand out from the black patina applied to the surface. Shakudo needs to be handled with great care. It should never be polished or placed in water. This locket is one of the finest examples of historic Shakudo we have ever seen, and is museum worthy. The interior is in consistent condition with a piece that is over 150 years old.
