Description : A family crest is also called a 'coat of arms' and is the signature of a family name throughout its history. It was also a way for knights to identify themselves on a battlefield. This piece of camphor glass has a family crest affixed to the top of the piece. Camphor glass was used instead of carved rock crystal by coating glass with hydrofluoric acid that frosted the glass to look like gum camphor. This was a popular style and process known to be used often in Victorian jewelry. The back of the glass is usually etched in a radiant pattern and shows through in a ghostly star-like pattern through the front.
