Victorian Silver Gilt synthetic ruby and pearl ring
Victorian Silver Gilt synthetic ruby and pearl ring
Description : The synthetic ruby was first produced circa 1885 by the Geneva company. Originally they were fragments of ruby material that were melted down, and fashioned into gemstones. In 1892 a process called flame fusion was developed by August Verneuil, and was showcased at the Paris World's Fair. This synthetic faceted 18mmx9mm long oval is a beauty. The shift in color from purplish to orange red is amazing. The gilt silver work surrounding it and the ring itself is beautifully detailed. Gilt is a process where a base metal is coated with a thin layer of silver or gold. Two, 4mm cultured pearls accent the ruby on the top and bottom of the setting. There is a chain link rope that surrounds the center stone. What an incredible piece of history this ring is. Size 5
