Victorian 10KY gold carved shell cameo of Trevi Fountain in Rome

Description : This spectacular rendition of the Trevi fountain in Rome, Italy is carved into a huge shell. A cameo is a carving that produces 'relief' texture on top of the orangeish red color of the semi-translucent shell material. Brought back recently from Italy by our owner, the cameo is set in 10K yellow gold. The original fountain was designed in the Trevi sector of Rome, and designed by Nicola Salvi, and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762. Founded at the location of three water sources, this series of three aqueducts served the city of Rome for 400 years. The central figure is Oceanus and his shell chariot. Behind him is a triumphal arch, and Tritons as sentinels by his side. The theme is called, 'The Taming of the Waters.'
