Description : The name of this eagle is 'Alexander ' which is befitting, as a reference to Alexander the Great who reigned as king over the largest empires in the ancient world. At 80mm tall and 60mm wide this East Indian treasure is over 200 years old. Laden with Mogok Valley cabochon rubies, his chest hosts a significant Golconda diamond Mughal cut in a teardrop shape and surrounded in a halo of smaller polki diamonds. A polki diamond has a flat back, and is set on a metallic background to highlight the light in the stone. The Golconda mine was first opened in 1619, and is known for its type IIa diamond that showed excellent color and light. They have almost no nitrogen impurities, and this mine produced the Koh-i-noor and the Hope diamond. The production of these diamonds was depleted in 1830 and the mines were located near the Krishna River in the region of Andhra Pradesh. As the mines are no longer producing these rare and valuable diamonds, Alexander is the guardian of this ancient treasure. When you look at the reverse, the multi colored enamel Meenakari is brilliant in tones of reds, greens and blues, and shows the wear against a royal cloak worn many years ago. This pendant is attached to a silk cord necklace.
