Description : Signed by Ann Sheyka, this inlay owl and her owlets is a Native masterpiece. A large owl with peering eyes is inlaid with mother of pearl, turquoise, coral and onyx in the Zuni tradition of inlay. Designed as an adjustable bolo tie, there are two baby owlets that hang from the finials of the leather. Their eyes are looking in the same way as the mother. Owls are a symbol of the afterlife, wisdom and insight. They are teachers to the tribes. They command respect for the unknown and the unseen. They are symbolic of the shadows of life. Ann Sheyka worked with her husband Porfilio Sheyka. They were active from 1961-1982, and are among some of the most prestigious Zuni inlay artists known. Their work is included in the Phyllis Hersh collection in the National Museum of the American Indian.
