Modern 18KY gold and Australian black opal post earrings

Description : Lightning Ridge Australia is a town in the outback of New South Wales. It is known for the geological marvel of black opal mines. Black opal is formed by the slow precipitation of gel silica which solidifies and becomes the opal that we see today. It has been mined since the 1880's however black opal's popularity and value has increased over the recent years. Opal is generally a soft material that forms in sedimentary rock, and often replaces organic materials like bone and wood. Black opal is unique as the overall base color is black, and the play of color of opal hovers on the top of the base. These two lovely flat tablets of black opal are securely surrounded by 18KY gold bezel wire, and accented with an 18Ky gold open work, organic linear pattern. Signed by the artist.
