Description : What a love story! In 1785 Maria Anne Fitzhebert opened a love letter from her lover, Prince George of Wales. Their love was fraught with obstacles, between the rules of royalty and religion, she had to flee. He was determined however to ask for her hand in marriage. To her surprise he sent a gift that stated, "I send you a parcel". Inside was an enamel painted image of his eye forever preserved in a loving gaze. They were covertly wed very soon after, and she also had her eye painted for him, so that when he was not near her, he could always see her adoring look. This c. 1790, 15K rose gold pin and enamel hand painting is the representation of someone's eye from nearly 200 years ago. What a poignant memento, and British historic treasure. The lover's eye became a popular trend in the 1800's through the early 20th century.
