Victorian 18KY gold over gilded bronze 'Ormolu' chain necklace

Description : The process of Ormolu is always used in the gilding of bronze objects. One way to tell if an item is genuine is the weight of it, as other processes are much lighter in weight, and genuine Ormalu always has a warm glow to its color. The bronze object was coated in a gold-mercury almalgam and then subjected to extreme heat in a kiln which vaporizes the mercury and the gold coating remains. This 80" long chain was most likely made in the late 1800's even though the process was outlawed in 1830. Safe to wear, this chain necklace with dainty filigree components is in perfect condition and can wrap around the head several times for a richly colored layered style.
