Description : Sir Walter Raleigh is the featured person in this portrait. He lived from 1553 to October of 1618 in Devon, England. He was an explorer, and was the first to colonize Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. He was in love with Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting, When it was found out, he and his wife were banished. Raleigh traveled the world, but came upon bad luck in Spain and was beheaded. He was also a writer and a poet, having written the works The Nymph's reply to the Shepherd, a response for an unrequited love. 'If all the world and love were young, and truth in every Shepherd’s tongue, These pretty pleasures might me move, To live with thee, and be thy love' This beautifully carved cameo is very detailed and is quite realistic. A cameo is often carved from one sheet of calciferous shell or agate material that uses the various colored layers to delineate the forms. This agate is carved in a rectangular format and set in a 6, double prong 9KY gold setting. The portrait here in this ring looks as real as the one in the engraved illustrations found to represent him, including the 'ruff' that he was known to wear. Size 6.25
