Description : This charming bee pin is handcrafted in sterling silver with blue, white, and black enameling. The bee measures approximately 1.5 inches at its widest point and 1 inch long. The pin weighs 7.31 grams.
The piece is hallmarked on the back and signed by Margot Van Voorhies Carr, also known by her artisan name, Margot de Taxco.
Starting in the mid-1930s, the hill town of Taxco became a destination for tourists and a center for hand wrought, artisan silver industry. Under the guidance of architect and designer William Spratling, a workshop that became a community of artisans called Taller de las Delicias emerged and flourished. The artist collective transformed a minor art into a complex and successful industry built on innovation and the fabrication of new techniques. Taxco became a creative center for modern silver jewelry created by a gifted and diverse collective of artists following the Revolution of 1910, which left many of Mexico’s citizens in search of a national identity—what would later become known as Mexicanismo. The works coming out of Taxco transformed silver designs based on colonial and European models to a emphasis on pre-Colombian imagery and cultural expression.
Please note that this pin has suffered some enamel loss that is consistent with age and is sold in its present condition.
