PINCHBECK
Early Victorian 'Pinchbeck' chain link necklace
Early Victorian 'Pinchbeck' chain link necklace
Description : 'Pinchbeck' is the name of the metal alloyed with brass, copper and zinc to give it the appearance of genuine gold. Developed by a clockmaker named Christopher Pinchbeck in London in the 18th century, this metal served a two-fold purpose. One was to make a warm yellow metal that looked like gold affordable for the general public, and the second was to deflect any losses as people traveled by stagecoach and the risk of theft was very high. Each cast, decorative organic link of this necklace aptly depicts the Victorian style. At only 15 inches long, it is for a smaller neck. The beauty of this chainlink necklace is unparalled and its historic relevance such an interesting back-story in this piece of jewelry.
