Victorian Gilt Sterling Silver Carved Shell Cameo Neck pendant

Description : The Sumerians were the first to develop the carving of banded agate or layered shell, into cameos. Originally intended as seals, or portraits, the cameo has been found in the history of jewelry for nearly 6500 years. There were several eras that are considered 'revivals' and the Victorian period is a prominent example. This 50mm long carved shell cameo is titled, Night and Day, and is a necklace pendant, designed to slide onto a 2 inch wide piece of black velvet ribbon, and worn as a collar. Gilt silver is sterling silver coated with a fine layer of gold. In some areas you can see an appropriate amount of patina and wear on this piece. The eyes of the 'night' figure are closed, and she looks downward, and the eyes of the 'day' are open. Two women, one looking up, and the other down represent the life cycle. An owl sits at their breast, and they are surrounded by peonies. The stars are above with the crescent moon, and the sun is shown rising. The spirit is strong in this magnificent and large scale piece.
