Victorian 22KY gold filigree and natural pearl hoop earrings
Victorian 22KY gold filigree and natural pearl hoop earrings
Description : The word filigree means a 'delicate wire form that is traced'. High karat gold is most often used in the creation of filigree as the wire is soft enough to be formed into very intricate woven patterns. Made in India these earrings were also meant to connect to either the nose or the hair and symbolise the availability of the woman who wears them. Called a Nath, these earrings would refer to a woman's marital status. The pearls are natural and clustered onto the earrings, where a hook would connect with a chain. Two pearls drop from the bottom of the hoop and another gem might be placed on the hoop in the center. Hand made by East Indian artisans, these are large hoops that could be worn without the chain. Natural pearls of this age are a rarity. The diameter of these earrings are about 35mm, and would certainly be a conversation starter! Historic cultural treasures, these earrings would be spectacular on someone with very dark hair.
