Description : Created around the years of 1830, this pin and locket is a tribute to a powerful, fierce and harsh woman ruler nearly 200 years earlier. Catherine de Medici was born in Florence, married by pre-arrangement at 14 years old by dictate of the Pope, and eventually became the Queen of France from 1547 to 1559. She bore 3 sons, one being Henry the VIII. Seed pearls are generally a signifier of mourning jewelry. This locket has a rock crystal backing that allows the owner to put a personal item in a secret and intimate place. The overall size is 35mm long x 30mm wide. The enamel is in very good condition and has some of the foil backed details found in the papillion process, which creates an iridescent sheen in specifically highlighted areas. She wears a string of pearls, and a crown. This is a beautifiul piece of history, in an exquisitely crafted heirloom.
