Description : The Edo Period in Japan was from 1603-1867. Shakudo is actually an alloy that was used for metal working during that time and to this day. The blackened copper base of the piece was highlighted with various metal inlays, including gold and silver. This pin is an incredible example of the process, and shows beautiful birds flying across the pin. Note the amazing perfected twist in the pin itself, a technique for keeping the pin in place so it does not slide out of the material. Not only is this a fine historical example of Japanese metalsmithing, but an example of asymmetrical beauty and grace represented in a pin. The original box is a rare surviving example that shows the silk fibers now separated, and a velveteen bed that this pin sits upon.
