Topaz is the birthstone for November. We think that it is one of the most reasonably priced, durable and lovely gemstones on the market. The name 'Topaz' in Sanskrit means ‘Fire’ or ‘heat’, and has been found in the history of trade for thousands of years.
Often topaz is thought of as a golden yellow color, which is known as Imperial Topaz, but this gemstone comes in a variety of colors that are unexpected and lovely. London Blue topaz is a version that is a darkish blue-green, and very distinctive. There is a lighter blue which is called Swiss blue, and there are other colors too, including yellow, pink and red. Most of the colors of topaz come from the colorless material that is mined, and then heat treated to achieve a specific color.
Some of the biggest topaz mines are in Brazil, but this hard, silicate material that measures 8 on the Mohs scale making it very durable, is also found in Russia, Germany and the United States. It is often ‘eye clean’ which means it is free of inclusions and looks very fine.
Blue Topaz is known as the stone of clarity, and its symbolism indicated that when worn it supports clear communication and brings wisdom. White Topaz is worn to improve awareness and an aid to manifestation, and Golden Topaz supports creating abundance and channels the sun.
Not only is Topaz the birthstone for November, but it is also given for the 4th and 23rd wedding anniversaries.
