He saw a need for something and resolved a problem. Living from 1835 to 1901, he began by creating restaurants and gift shops all along the railways that were being rapidly built across the United States. He started with his partner opening two cafes along the Kansas Pacific Railroad in 1873. Fred Harvey gift shops featured jewelry that was manufactured by Native Americans for the tourist trade along the railroad routes, which was insatiable. This sterling silver cuff bracelet is a prime example. Stamping was popular because it allowed the artist to fabricate more quickly. The centerpiece of this sterling silver triple band wide cuff bracelet has a bezel set, oval green turquoise cabochon with minimal matrix. A twisted braid surrounds it. There is a floral feeling to this bracelet. Many of the mines in the late 1800’s are closed so the gemstone could be very hard to find. The beauty of Fred Harvey jewelry is how consistent the quality is of each piece. This was established by standardizing the process. The jewelry was not always signed or hallmarked.
