Description : A fabulous early Victorian/Late Georgian Gilt Bohemian Garnet Snake Ring ca 1820. The ring was originally hinged but has since been soldered at the hinges. This serpentine beauty extends lugubriously on the finger, measuring 6cm from the tip of its tongue to the end of its tail. Western Europe went ga-ga for snakes when, in 1839, Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with a gold entwined snake ring. His proposal, and their relationship, set trends in fashion and jewelry for decades, even following his death. The snake, in the Victorian context, follows the Roman model and signifies everlasting love. In the Sumerian context, and later in Greek traditions, snakes symbolized fertility, balance, power, renewal, and healing. Currently this ring can fit a size 5.5-6, but your skilled jeweler may be able to size at the hinges.
